This piece is created in collaboration with intangible cultural heritage artisans from ethnic minorities in Southwest China. With a fashion-forward language and a Make-To-Order approach, these products bring traditional craftsmanship into everyday wardrobes. It is handcrafted locally by artisans—using techniques such as batik, embroidery, weaving, and brocade—before being sent to Shanghai for garment assembly. 

Bouyei Handwoven Fabric
The Bouyei people of Guizhou are known for their narrow-width plaid fabrics, a cultural emblem woven into daily life. Their weavers abstract natural forms into patterns described as “colors from afar, shapes up close,” passing down the craft orally through generations.

In 2024, DEFICELER Unbinding began archiving these traditional motifs in collaboration with Bouyei women in Ceheng County, preserving heritage while adapting it for modern design. Embracing the irregularities of handwoven textiles, the brand transforms mismatched plaids into geometric transitions that refine proportion and form.

Even in an era dominated by industrial fabrics, Bouyei women who continue to weave embody a quiet resilience—imperfect, unstandardized, yet profoundly enduring.
